Newburgh to terminate contract for Flock license plate readers

In September, the Newburgh City Council is expected to terminate its contract with Flock Safety for automated license plate recognition technology. Council members and residents expressed concern that data could be shared with federal agencies. A resolution states the technology “is no longer consistent with the city’s policy priorities regarding privacy, civil liberties, public accountability and community trust.” If approved, the city would stop using the system through the remainder of the year. City attorney Michele Kelson said steps are needed to protect existing data. Residents of Pleasant Valley have also raised concerns about the system.
