Asheville City Council cancels Flock Safety contract

The Asheville City Council voted 5-2 on August 25, 2026, to terminate the city’s contract with Flock Safety, ending the operation of 11 Flock automatic license plate readers. The contract had been in place since 2025 and was originally set to run through 2027. The resolution stated that Asheville has not used facial recognition technology and has not shared Flock data with facial recognition databases. The city manager will review the contract, and the police department will engage with an American Civil Liberties Union policy reviewer. Council members S. Anntanette Mosley and Sheneika Smith voted against the resolution.
