Avon Town Council votes 4-3 to terminate Flock camera contract

On October 7, 2026, the Avon Town Council voted 4-3 to terminate its contract with Flock Safety for 12 automated license plate reader cameras. Council members cited fears of federal overreach, data breaches, and artificial intelligence. Some cameras will be decommissioned immediately, while a few already paid for must remain until the contract is fully cancelled. The vote followed vandalism and public debate. Council member Kevin Hyatt said, “The AI is scary, the data safety is scary.” Council member Ruth Stanley said she had questions about who can access information. The mayor and mayor pro tem voted to keep the cameras. The town is researching closed surveillance systems to replace Flock.
