Monroe, Ohio, ends Flock Safety contract over privacy concerns

Monroe, Ohio, City Council voted unanimously on September 22, 2026, to end its contract with Flock Safety and deactivate all 23 license-plate reading cameras. The city approved a two-year contract in 2024 with a reported cost of $149,950. Residents were split, with one resident saying, “I’m here because I’m really sick and tired of seeing those protections eroded by a digital dragnet we never consented to.” Council members described the decision as difficult. Mayor and vice mayor were absent. Voters could potentially bring cameras back, but not on the November ballot.
