San Francisco Police Audit Shows Feds ‘Improperly’ Accessed License Plate Data Hundreds of Times

On June 17, 2026, the San Francisco Police Department disclosed an audit revealing that the Northern California Regional Intelligence Center (NCRIC) had improperly accessed license plate reader data hundreds of times since May 2025. Analysts from the West States Information Network (WSIN) conducted searches on behalf of out-of-state and federal agencies, violating California’s 2015 law barring such sharing. SFPD Chief Derrick Lew said the department had disabled NCRIC and WSIN access. The audit covered SFPD and more than 500 law enforcement agencies statewide.
