California police illegally shared ALPR data with ICE and Border Patrol

Records show that in May 2025, law enforcement agencies in Southern California violated state law more than 100 times by sharing automated license plate reader data with federal agents. The Los Angeles Police Department and sheriff’s departments in San Diego and Orange counties searched license plate readings on behalf of ICE and Customs and Border Protection. The records came from a Flock audit report obtained by Oakland Privacy and provided to CalMatters. California Senate Bill 34 bars state agencies from sharing such data with federal entities.
