King County DA bans acceptance of AI-generated police reports

On September 20, 2024, the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office announced it will not accept police report narratives produced with the assistance of AI. The office cited concerns including lack of CJIS compliance, undetectable errors, and absence of an audit trail. It specifically flagged Axon’s Draft One, noting it relies on body-worn audio, can generate hallucinations, and does not track error rates. The office said officers would be certifying reports that could contain unnoticed errors, potentially leading to false certifications. It also noted that Axon does not keep drafts to show what the officer changed. The office stated it will not accept any AI-assisted narratives until these issues are resolved.
